Does anyone get their skins back from the slaughterhouse and get them tanned? I am interested in exploring this further. Any tips/insight?

yup we are fortunate enough to have a local tannery, we have to go back to the abattoir and collect the skin (going back for the pluck anyway) and then take it around to the tannery where they salt it and they do it in the next batch.

I know some here do their own. i think the first thing you have to do is salt it.. have heard of people freezing them until they are ready to process it. Dunno if this works out or not.

Yep, we use the Alum tawed hides recipe and have had great results.

The length of time the hides are left in the pickle doesn't seem to matter too much - as long as it's not less than the minimum! Stretching them when they're out of the pickle is the strenuous part - I'd recommend doing it a few times while they're drying. We did use oil on one of the early hides but found that it didn't add anything to the flexibility but did attract dirt!

Good luck and feel free to pm me if you've got any more questions.
