In a work related capacity I need to modernise my selection of vegetarian, and possibly investigate vegan

cookbooks.

Any suggestions? I've already had the new HFW and Ottolengi suggested to me, I'll give Hugh a look, but from what I've seen from the online extracts Ottolengi looked a bit boring?

I want something a lot more modern than the Rose 'beans don't make you fart' Elliott type of thing.

I use several but Leiths vegetarian bible and Cordon Rouge the little red herring cookbook seem to get as much use as any.

I HAVE that one Mithril - I bought it in a charity shop some time ago. Truly AWESOME book. I need something a bit more modern 'British' for a cafe in St Dogmaels so I can incorporate some local produce. Kate

The Greens Cookbook, The Savory Way and Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, all by Deborah Maddison are wonderful - the Greens Cookbook is the most refined, the last has a more homely style but all the recipes I have tried are excellent. I use these books almost daily.

If I need a new reference book I'm not sure about, I see if there's one in the library or get them to reserve one and then if I decide it's a "keeper" I buy one.

I picked up an old Sainsbury's Vegetarian cookbook from a charity shop a while back. The recipes I have tried have turned out pretty well. Might be worth looking out for.

Isa Chandra Moskowitz has done a few excellent vegan cookbooks. They're very much based on American style foods but there are quite a few recipes that are easily adapted. The Happy Herbivore is another good one.

Have a look at Plenty,by Yotem Otolenghi. Excellent book.

Because they're ancient now, the cookbooks by my favourite writer of vegetarian recipes, Colin Spencer, are exceedingly cheap second hand on Amazon. 'Cordon Vert' is a great book, and at 1p plus delivery, a bargain.

What's Cooking - vegetarian, by Jenny Stacey is excellent (t he kidney bean Kievs are lovely) Taste of the Unexpected by Mark Diacono has some nice recipes in too Gaia's Kitchen by Julia Ponsonby another good one, and multipiles the recipes u to feed bigger numbers

It's brill, isn't it .

That's my only veggie book though, so I'm out of suggestions. However, Nigel Slater's Tender Volumes I and II and also the Abel & Cole Cookbook contain quite a few vegetarian recipes and might be worth a look. I like the way they are based round whatever veg or fruit you have in / the season.
