We are having a small extension put on the house which will contain an en suite bathroom.
Our hot water is heated by an oil fueled boiler (megaflow pressurised system).
I know we will get a good flow from a mixer shower, but think we are not disciplined enough to reduce the time we spend languishing under it. Therefore we are likely to see our oil costs rise. Currently the hot water is only on for 10mins in the morning and 20mins at night (our boiler efficient but quite large for the size of the house)
An electric shower will give a reasonable flow and be instant- we have this in our main bathroom.
Our roof may be suitable for PV or solar hot water but that's not an investment we want to make yet.
So which shower is better?

Electric - in my case it "spreads the risk" in case your boiler has a problem, you can still get hot water

Good point. It's 13 years old. Sill too efficient to warrant changing it according to our local boiler man.

Personal preference rather than plumbing expertise .......Electric

Mixer valves I find you have to mess about getting temperature right, Apart from a small change winter to summer, with electric you just switch it on and in seconds is at your chosen temperature.
Downside with electric is if someone else runs a tap / flushes toilet - you get scalded.

We don't seem to have that problem, but our water pressure is high so I'm guessing that prevents it.
Thanks for your input- it confirms what we were thinking
