Flippin 'eck - they are about 15€ for 6 in Point Vert. I wonder if they will have them in the IKEA here - I could do with a load more? I assume they are tough enough to go in an oven/water bath - they look good enough.

I'd seen them in Ikea and assumed they wouldn't do for preserving, but clicking on that link they say they ARE suitable.

Leclerc is about the best value here for this sort of thing

Packs of 6 are about the same price per jar

ETA Korken jars are currently 1.50 euros in Ikea here

I've used them for pickles and spirits.

Suitable for preserving? I'd need to be convinced. I had a batch of similar jars that were cheap from Julian Graves when they closed down A) the lids were so poorly fitting it was nigh on impossible to make a seal
B) they were actually very thin and quite a few broke when I heated them to sterilise.

Ended up using them as pretty packaging for stuff packed in bags inside!

Give them a go, but I'd say have some other jars on standby so you don't waste your pickle/jam efforts

just done a test filled them with water held upside down for a few minutes and not a drip so would sat pretty much air tight.. also filled a warm jar with boiling water left it till it went cold and no cracks... so a good buy id say

I've read that Ikea jars are not suitable for bottling, water bath or oven method. Boiling water left to go cold is not the same as 35 minutes in a boiling water bath on the stove top. Would exercise extreme caution.

Added to what Luath says - can you get additional seals for them? I didn't think you could.

I've finally got rid of my two dozen 1950's kilner jars, because I couldn't get replacement metal screw tops for them

Mine cracked when I put hot jam in them, although they'd been sterilised in the oven, and were still hot. But if yours seal, it would seem Ikea have the edge on the ones I had!

Sounds good if they do replacement seals. I am forty miles from Ikea. It makes me sad.
