Ignoring the hall phone comment I just want to be able to use my tablet out and about when I want to i.e. connect to the internet. So would a dongle make that happen?

It says Asus Nexus 2 3 2GB on the receipt

That tells you it 32GB but the additional info on the box may give you some indication of the connectivity.

Yes. And it will cost you money. This may or may not be worth it. Depends where and what for. Wifi might be enough. Try it, and see, before you leap in.

Depending on who your home internet provider is ypu might be able to use hotspots out of the home for wifi connections, alternaivly you may be able to set up a tether to your mobile phone and use that internet connection when out and about.
My samsung ace can create its own hotspot that i use for my ipod if i need internet connection when out.

The guy in the shop might know thst your phone is capable of running the internet for your tablet hence his saying you cpuld use it anywhere.

I think "anywhere" is salesmanspeak for "well, it works in this shop".

If you have a reasonable smart phone, you can tether it to that and use the data allowance on the phone rather than buying a separate dongle

You definitely don't have a 3G connection on that tablet

Or, possibly, he's right. It can be used anywhere. I suspect, if he'd known phone network connectivity was required, he might have suggested the more expensive, more profitable version that did that. It's possible the customer was less than clear about her requirements.

What Joanne says.

But, it's entirely possible your phone contract does not permit tethering. If it does, it will work, if doesn't, it will not.

Additionally, pay attention to how much data costs on your contract. A tablet will use a lot more than you're currently using on a typical smart phone, and scary bills are something to beware of.

Well, either you were not clear, or the sales guy sold you something unsuitable.

Thanks Jo - that's really helpful. I'll have a look at it later.

Then you should have been told that a Nexus 7 with 3G does not exist. I guess your options are pay extra for the dongle/tethering option, or take it back and ask for something that actually does the job.

And it's a Blackberry, unless you own the whole company.
