Ive got a pair of lambs which I used to keep paddock grass down over summer and which I now want to take to nearby abbatoir (3 miles).
I have the above big car which physically has room for them (especially with back seats down), and I could construct a small pen within, to stop them jumping into the front.
I don't have a trailer or a towbar and am loathe to shell out on either for this one job.
Are there any rules prohibiting moving lambs like this. I collected them from purchaser in same car 6months ago but they were a lot smaller then. Or will I just get funny looks and eye rolling from the slaughtermen?

My initial thought is that you're going to have to declare that you need to cleanse it after. Noones ever checked or cared, but it might be query able by the TS guys. I bought my pigs home in my Alfa.

I can't see anything in the rules that stop you. It mentions ramp angles for loading and unloading, but not much else probably matters.

it used to be normal to avoid the skye bridge toll by adding a back seat passenger with a wooly jumper

I think in theory that such a mode of transport is illegal, but if you check with the abbatoir first, and ask for a blind eye. I think that in theory, they must be able to walk onto the transport and walk off using a side guarded ramp;ie load and unload themselves! You could always check with the defra site, or pm Oaklandspigs as he will know for sure or tell you where to find out.

The really big question should be "What does your Mrs or significant other half think about the idea?"

A long time ago, as fresh face newly weds, my wife and I took two goats in a Renault 4 van along to our first and only ever goat show. The first time that we braked at the bottom of a hill, the foot wells filled with goat piss.

thats a lovely, romantic story, Bodger!
It sounds as if I'd need to make some kind of a ramp they could walk out by

There used to be a cattle market down the road from my school, the loval farmers often brought sheep to market in their saloon cars.
Mind you, it was easier then, pre seat belt laws...

Based on what?

Quote:
If you’re transporting animals for less than 65 kilometres (about 40 miles), it’s not necessary for vehicles to be authorised or for drivers/handlers to hold certificates of competence.

Quote:
The Regulation does not apply to:
Transport of animals not in connection with an economic activity.

Think any transport of livestock the vehicle needs to be cleared by animal health to be deemed fit for purpose ie easily to jet wash and disinfection (metal or plastic covering is usally standard ). Ramp for entry and exit addiquet ventilation. Would be worth looking into though. If you remember Adam Henson had his l200 signed off for transportation of livestock but with that it could be washed out it also had vented windows in the side. But then the downside is if they play up are you wanting to pay out on a new window when they either accidently fall into a window or even having a play fight and head butting the boot window.

See, what I did was look into it. And posted the regulations and links I found. Delighted to be corrected, but otherwise, it looks like there's no issue with it.
