The laptop thinks the printer is turned off. Everything's turned on and plugged in.

Help!

Please.

Between turn off and turn on, remember the magic words "Now work you stupid <expletive> thing"!

Done that. It's getting close to 'cat vs printer' time.

Have you plugged the cat in instead of the printer?

Is the lappy not seeing the printer at all, or seeing it but refusing to talk to it?

If you started printing something, delete the print turn both laptop and printer off then on again,

I don't think the laptop is seeing the printer at all. I've done the switch off, switch on and I've restarted. The cats are fine: I wormed them earlier.

And I can't whittle a new printer.

Assuming PC is Windows - after printing something is it sitting in the Print Queue? (Perhaps you will find that everything you have printed is in that queue). If there are loads of jobs there perhaps the top one is causing a problem some how, highlight them all and CANCEL them perhaps? I find I have to, also, turn the printer off/on to clear whatever junk made it ill - sometimes a second time for whatever stuff them went down the wire - once the queue is clear try printing something really simple (not the original document which might cause the same problem)

Should be a Diagnostic option there (although I've never found it told me enough to diagnose a problem, but here's hoping)

Start : Devices and Printers

Right click the Printer and choose "What's printing" (for the print queue). It will either be empty or list some jobs that are "in progress"

Start : Devices and Printers

Right click the Printer and choose "Troubleshoot" for the diagnosis - don't hold your breath

Try plugging it in to a different USB socket on the laptop.

I've checked/tried all those, kGarden Sean: I hadn't thought of that! I'll have a go in a bit

Were there documents in the queue?

Did diagnostic problem finder suggest anything?

Outcome of those might suggest a next course of action.

In Control Panel under devices and Printers, as per kGarden's advisory, you should find your printer listed. Check it's marked as the default printer (right click 'Set as Default Printer'). Then under Printer Properties you should find a button labelled 'Print Test Page'.

No documents in the queue suggests that, as far as the computer was concerned, it was able to transmit them to the printer.

That suggests that the printer was on and connection was sound. (You could try disconnecting the USB cable and printing again and checking that there ARE documents retained in the queue)

Seems surprising to me, if the printer is NOT capable of physically printing, that it would devour all the data it was sent - rather than consuming the first few bytes and then no more whilst it attempted to print.

Maybe the mechanism for moving the print head is bust, but it is merrily printing on-the-spot instead? (Should be some inky mess if that is the case)
