Some types of wasp look a bit like that, and one of them stung husband some years ago.

Butterflies are starting to be a bit more common. May have seen a silver washed frittllary the other day, but not sure as it was in silhouette. Certainly seen speckled woods.

Sgt colon, it will be the larvae ("leather jackets") that surprise you.

Nice story.

This year, rather than birds, we have bumble bees nesting in our timber frame. They aren't too keen on the thumping as a piece of timber lands, but apart from buzzing out a bit, they haven't caused any major problems. Perhaps we need to clean it all out at the end of the year. They are probably in an old birds nest.

My brother has bumble bees that has set up shop in a birdbox. Will they all have gone by the winter or might the queen hibernate in there?

iirc which sort of bees matters, a good home may be reused or continually occupied, some send new queens out, etc

i would assume the bees have it until proven otherwise, such things can be relocated in winter or by a beek

Thanks DPack, I'll let him know. He did say about just relocating it further down the garden, away from where they sit. His wife is scared of them.

now the bramble is in flower, i will try for a snap of me in a cloud of them to put her at greater ease

they are very polite, a few are even happy to get stroked like a dog or cat, but smaller and very gently

if you are relaxed with them they will be relaxed with you

I look forward to that snap DPack.

I've tried to tell her bees are nice and won't bother you. I don't think she believes me.

Very likely to be tree bumble bees. They shouldn't cause any problems but they can get a bit agitated by vibrations. https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/tree-bumblebee-bombus-hypnorum/#defensive

I've watched a nest in a tree without any problems at all.

By now you may see drones flying around the entrance. By late July they'll leave and the queens overwinter somewhere else. Full details in the link I posted.

the last ones in a bird box i came across had fallen out of the tree, i picked it up and put it in a safer place, they stayed there until the end of the summer

they were a bit agitated but not aggressive, thinking of such i have only met a few over defensive bees, all of those were "domestic" hives

i started learning which bee had what name and which role it played, hundreds of em and they often come in several"genders" and styles

there is one of the towny pigeons eating at the mo, i was taken by the dazzle pattern aspect of his markings, there are 5 very similar ones, and wondered if that may be a response to the threat of grin?

it might well help
