We went for a walk in a woodland we hadn't really visited for about 50 years yesterday, although it isn't very far from home. Interesting, as I didn't realise it had a wood bank round it. Hard to see what it was originally as it is or has been mainly plantation, but saw a few interesting things. There was a roe deer crossing the track ahead of us, although I know there are also fallow in the area. Found some, I believe, wild lilly of the valley, a good number of common spotted orchids and some ragged robin among other things. Nothing I couldn't really identify or that I know to be rare. Saw a yellow butterfly that we are sure was a brimstone even though they are not supposed to be out now. The wing shape was right, and it had no black or dark colouration on the upper wing. It was feeding from the ragged robin, which is not a favoured food plant of the clouded yellow which is supposed to be flying at the moment. |
