They use those mirrors on sticks to check the dormouse boxes for occupants, but of course they are designed to be welcoming not killing.

i like dormouses

things are developing in a way that may be beneficial to us

the few bits of grain went, the cheese that allows a safe inch or so from the trap went

lick the peanut butter off the ceiling if you are feeling lucky punk

the bacon butty bits had gone

using a long victorian turn screw, the trap was moved over and in front of more bacon

it is big, clever is a definite if it got big

not quite moby trout that got personal, it won

the serving suggestion has left a puzzle for the last slice of dry sausage

dear rat, you might have been evicted by the builders like many before you, here is not home, it is hostile and dangeroos

off you toddle, a hose is merely flirting with your composure

re rat attractive, in some ways, i probably notice them more than most folk.

over the last few years there have been 3 big refurbishments with demolition etc, several serious domestic ones, the hotel and pub have both been shut and refurbed, so do they do not have a regular rat-catcher but have had their colonies evicted, there is little general control from the drain or street peeps, 2 week bin collections, low food supply in the city centre due to covid, etc.

the urban foxes are doing ok, im not sure if they can keep up with the rats though.

i wonder if you like cheddar cheese?

fortunately the sammisons think cheese is horrible stinky stuff even worse than charcuterie

fingers and hooves crossed for no bycatch, i do worry about it, although it has not happened yet.
accidents via H and S failings on my part mostly involving drownings in slug traps and maybe an accidental"that was supper, not 2 stage baited for the little owl to pounce on"incident

it is rather tense to protect the sammisons when murdering their slightly larger cousins without any blue on blue tragedies

if the sammis migrate for a bit it is much easier

ps i still find handling fenns rather scary

better than some things, they do have some amusing habits and a wicked sense of humour if you fail to maintain discipline.

i have seen set them in hands, no thanks
a big turnscrew and a 3 x 5 x 40 cm bit of hardwood seem to be the tools for the job.

open it, squash it get the safety on and still don't trust it, set it very carefully, getting a set one into position is loads of fun taking the safety off is best done with a turnscrew or other pokey thing

on a bench or whatever in the videos is not in the field

they are good anti rat kit if used with care

they may be dinner harvest options as well as vermin control, there are bigger ones than the number 4 rat size

Came across a slightly different trap a few weeks ago that is less dangerous for the operator. Called Goodnature, they operate using compressed gas. https://goodnaturetraps.co.uk/humane-rat-traps/ We were looking at their squirrel traps. They are expensive, but do seem to be reasonably effective and by releasing and resetting, mean they don't have to be checked on a daily basis. If you can find a suitable bait, the rat may be interested whereas the Sammisons won't be.
