Saw a doe roe deer yesterday just standing in the wood as we drove past yesterday. There has been one round our yard as there are signs of eating the tops of some plants, so we think one may sometimes come through at night.

We also have a mystery plant that was found by our volunteers on Saturday. Will keep an eye on it to see if it does anything like flower, which will make ID easier, but something has been chewing that too, so may never know. Have a feeling that it could be a garden invader, but not sure.

Nice pictures. The birds certainly seem to like the food bar.

how strange, the new sack of bird seed has about 10% aniseed in it

they seem to like it, they were as surprised as i was

spose if it was available at a suitable price it is as good as cheaper stuff if the keeps the fat/carb/protein ratios about right and provides a choice for different species

dried mealworms are popular for several species

fruit, cheese and soggy crackling are also highly valued foods as are the wild invertebrates

We were at a show yesterday and a pair of red kites gave us a good soaring display. On Saturday, one of the display raptors decided it wasn't going to play and flew up onto the top of one of the ruined buildings of the Bishops Palace where the event took place. It sulked up there for about 10 minutes.

Love the pictures DPack,

Aniseed, yes, thank you. I wondered what they were in our bag of birdseed. Maybe it's en vogue in the bird world at the moment?

have your ones got used to aniseed yet? my ones have, although they preferred whatever it replaced , which might have been linseed

re snaps, tis easier to play local with critters that know you than trying to "surprise" strangers

im not good at it yet

I suspect that linseed is being kept for oil production at the moment as sunflower oil is going to be in short supply because of the situation in Ukraine.

Forgot to say that the horse fly season seems to have started with us. We have a couple of work experience lads with us at the moment, and one seems to attract them. We have tried insect repellent spray, but they still seem to be after him.

Oh yes, I think they have. They are eating machines. They clear a feeder that is about 18" long in less than 24 hours. They are eating us out of house and home.

20kg of mixed seed a month and mealworms and fruit

that is all worth it as this morning a very young clarice starling arrived looking like a fugee and far too young to be alone
it ate a lot and had a bath the regulars showed it i was safe to be near

Doesn't look as if it is fully fledged. Perhaps got lost on its first flight? It seems to have found a suitable place to live with you anyway.

The owls were out in force again last night. A very late one, so plenty of nighttime activity. Saw the kite over the local road again on Tuesday, but forgot to post about it.
