Has anybody grown a Butternut squash in a compost bin. I have a couple of plastic bell shaped 1m tall compost bins. The contents built up over 2 years. My plan this year is to add a 30cm layer of good compost, as a capping. Then plant a single B Squash into each bin. Has anybody done this before, any advice, did it work or fail.

Was a different squash but yes it worked. Also had self sown squashes in a compost heap left them to their own devices and they were. Ok

I've grown squash in the compost heap and in containers so I am sure it would work - would need plenty of water though, so near a water butt would be handy

i have used unrotted deep litter, also deep rotting straw and mixture a handful of "soil" in a small hole keeps the seed roots safe from "strong compost" and by the stage the roots have grown into the main body they can cope with it i have seen assorted curcubits on compost and dung heaps it works rather well

Never done it intentionally, but have frequently gotten large jack o'lanterns from compost piles. Care was always 100% neglect
