Made a yurt with some help from my friends over summer using willow and old marque canvas, heres a few pictures. Still to come, wooden double door from old pallets and woodstove.

Did you follow any plans or design it yourself? Are you going to live in it or use it for camping? Once upon a time I wouldn't have dreamed of living in a yurt but... Actually I don't fancy a whole year in one but I think spending some time in the woods during the warmer months would be great.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.

Just to answer a few comments.

The red crown is actualy only made from marine ply then sanded down and then coated with two coats of aluminium paint and two red exterior gloss for the finnish.

The yurt i plan to put in my allotment when i get it as storage/ chillout area , the plots around here have 8 foot high hedges all around them all with doors built into the hedge, so are quite private. I dont plan to live in it as am 18 and off to uni but it might go to some festivals next year.

It was semi from plans / semi going with the flow as ive never made anything from wood before

I really like the concept and the construct With the cost of university accomodation and tutoring fees, is there any chance of you making a couple for my kids ?

Awesome - I love yurts they are such a fantastic concept - How much does it weigh and how small does it collapse to ?

if you were making them i would save up for one, you could even come and use my willow hedge for it!! i would love one of these, i saw a couple put one up at the small nations festival and i was amazed how quick it was, but it did seem to need two or more people...

This yurt is bigger then it looks on the picture, its at least 8 foot high in the middle and and the top of the walls just over 5 foot, but because of the pitch of the roof i (6') can stand up pretty much anywhere inside. Its also 12' diamiter.

The walls are made from 3 khana lattice sections so they basicly fold up. Then you have the door, roofpoles, crown and canvas. This yurt fits easily on the roofrack of a normal car with the canvas weighing the most due to willow being a nice and light material.

I had not actualy thought about making them to sell this was just a project as such but due to my bank being bare i might have to give it some thought :p maybe even sell this one off. The materials to make a yurt this size would come to say 400 pounds at the minimum, its the man hours involved that make them usualy quite expensive (takes quite alot of time to make). So if you have any spare time id advise trying to make one on your own, i managed it and ive never sewed or made anything from wood before.

Looks really nice. Should look really fab when you have the stove in the there I would imagine you could get your material costs down by shopping around for canvas if you were planning to make more, plus it might be worth advertising on Freecycle for canvas offcuts or old scout tents to re-use? Was it someone here who made a felt Yurt last year, or am I imagining that?

i was starting one with the scouts but the powers that be laughed at me and old me to buy a tent instead...horrid people!!!
