My chickens won't eat that, or anything mashed with warm water.

Ours will. They love boiled cabbage, mixed with corn and pellets in the water and flung in the pen. They go mad for it.

We've been known to give them left over porridge.

Well, all right. We've been known to make extra porridge so there is some left over for the chickens .

Generally we'll mix this with some layers pellets to make it go further.

They will eat pellets that have been wet too, only you have to make sure you're only giving them the amount they'll eat then and there, not leaving it for them to help themselves to during the day, because they don't seem to like the wet stuff after a while.

Mine eat anything, but they really like warm food. My daughter went out in the garden eating a nice hot buttery piece of marmalade toast last spring, and one of them flew up, snatched the toast from her hand and ran off up the garden with it, with the other two birds in hot pursuit.
