We have an area that has had layers and layers of bark chippings put on it to build up ground levels.

It has been laying as is for over a year now and this year what looks like mushrooms are appearing, as in the pics I took.

I wonder if anyone of the DS experts on mushrooms and fungi could tell me what is growing on the bark chippings and if they are edible or best left alone, I am afraid I have little knowledge of these things myself.

I can spot the ordinary field mushrooms that come up from time to time, and have prepared puffball mushrooms when in Northants area, but that is as far as it goes.

So any help much appreciated.

Darn Mochyn

I'll try and get the link to my village photo's page and maybe you could look from there direct.

I tried to do an image link to DS but that didn't work for me either.

Based on what looks like the dark brown gills, the ring on the stem and the colour...

Looks a bit like a sun dried agaric to me. Perhaps a horse mushroom. Although they all seem quite close together, maybe because it is growing with wood chippings?

As with a lot of photos on here, it is difficult to be sure, I could be way off, so please don't eat on my say. Probably not worth it anyway since they seem quite shrivelled from the sun, unless you want to dry them, in which case it is half done!

Edit:

Usual requirements...Have you got a spore print, if so what are the results...Have you got a picture of the cap...Does it stain, when bruised any colour (particularly yellow)...have you got a pic of its base...

I wouldn't dream of chancing eating until someone who knows about these things could identify them.

There are loads of them coming up and then, as spotted they are in direct sunlight (a rarity but very welcome and long overdue), and dry off quickly.

Something is eating them I take it slugs, I cannot get right up to them at the moment as my arthritic knee has decided to play up!, but will try and take some more pictures tomorrow.

This one is how they emerge from the bark chippings:-

This is a bit closer pic

I have taken these pics from the yard below, hence me saying can't get nearer them hopefully will be able to when I've rested the bad knee.

Maybe these are toadstools? I really don't know

Piles of wood chips throw up all sorts of things. Doesn't look like one I'd eat though.

Get a spore print if you can, and a look at tops and bottoms of caps would help us, and we can take it from there I should think.

Definitely not an Agaricus.

Very Interesting. This looks like something that I have found growing (in great numbers) on woodchip near my house. It first appeared in late March and has been popping up ever since, although I think it's getting near the end of it's fruiting cycle. It caused me a great amount of head scratching but have a look at....

My money (and I am now 90% sure) is that it's Psilocybe percevalii. The picture in the above site isn't great but have a look at....

https://www.pilzepilze.de/galerie/v/Lateinisch/P/psilocybe/percevalii/

One of the features of this fungus (in mature examples) is that the stem in hollow from the mid section down. Can you cut the stems with a sharp knife? It's best to do this with a fungus that is not to old as they tend to close down when dry and old.

The webpage says that this fungus is scarce. Maybe we/I should contact the BMS, but I've never done this before and don't know if it's worth it etc.
