OK, I've been playing with the idea of raising fish for food for a while.

We have space for a 10"x6" pond (in a damp/shaded area).. does anyone know if we could use this space to grow table fish? I've been trawling the net and information is very hard to come by.

I was thinking of perhaps carp, perch or maybe crayfish (natives) or molluscs. Has anyone done this to produce food for the table? if so, what kind of yields/time frames are we looking at?

This kind of system seems to fit in perfectly with our living-ethos and my interest has bee re-triggered by hearing of HFW's segment on carp-farming!

Any information/advice/insights would be much appreciated...

I've also just ordered John Seymore's book, so hopefully that should have some info too....

Cheers,

Truffle

Give the youngest a spade and promise a treat for every cubic foot she clears (from a pre-determined area).

Best to start small with these things.

Here's some details of the Carp farm on HFW if you didn't get to see it.

lol.... OK 10x6 inch was perhaps a tad optimistic. try 10x6 foot... even then, this may be too small?

Other family members with land are considering this on a bigger scale. Tahir: I've found lots of places to buy young/cheap carp, you may be interested in: https://www.slf.uk.net/prices.html
We just need guidelines on growing such fish for food and time lines etc

apparently not if you pruge them in clean water for 5 days before eating.

Cheers for the link Treacodactyl, I've e-mailed those guys but I'm not sure if my project is too small for them to advise on!

In the December '04 Country Smallholding magazine Alan Beat wrote a piece on "Fishing for profit - potential for fish farming on the smallholding", I remember reading it as it's something that greatly interests me. Can you get your paws on a copy?
