How do we begin to identify a weed that my youngnephew is interested in knowing about? It has 8 green pointy parts beneath the seedpuff ball at stem
fouind in Berks Co PA it is in a field near pond
tall has seed set up like dandelions

Could you post up a pic? There are some good books you could borrow from a library that may help identify it.

Roughly sounds like a hawkweed or a thistle family?

Are you in the UK? Roger Phillips Wildflowers book should be in your library, and shows wildflowers in order of flowering (roughly, of course) so that might help you track it down.

But a picture would help us enormously if you can!

Sounds from your address as if you're in the US. It could be something that occurs here too, but you're best bet is an American flora (book of wild flowers ). And, if possible, one that's local to your state. Any pictures? We're always happy to have a go... by the way, welcome!
