Are the scapes that appear from onions also worth eating, or would it damage the bulb to pick them?

What onions are you growing that are giving you flowers? Typically, you don't see flowers on onions that you've planted out that year.

For both the sake of the garlic bulb, and my diet, I try to snap off my scapes after they've gotten big enough to be worth something, but are still quite young and tender. Typically it's when they first start to curl into a loop (I love the way they do that... sometimes it's worth leaving a few, just to see how many loops they'll form into)

My preferred scape usage is garlic scape pesto - delicious.

A mix of red, yellow and whites (she says vaguely

). I always find that around 20% run to flower every year, particularly the red ones (Red Baron normally, but I'm growing a different one this year). Normally I just snap off the heads.

ETA I am growing from sets, not seed.

It's that time again..... ...I'm going for a bed of Music this year. Seems to be the most resistant to white rot and gives a good yield of tasty bulbs. Which reminds me, better prepare that bed for the garlic....

took mine up about a month ago and it was brill i have to say, didn't earth it up or anything over the winter but itall survived and the bulbs were nice and full...22 out of 24 cloves planted survived what was a dreadful winter up here.

i am saving one bulb to plant for next year and will probably put that in round about november which was what i did last year so why change a working plan

really pleased with it ...well chuffed

Our local gardening group got together and ordered 6KG bulk order from The Garlic Farm - it works out about 80p per bulb.

I've got white rot on the plot and I've tried some of those varieties and lost most of them by late May early June. The 'music' vasriety seems to have a high degree of resitance. Of course the most resistant was an unkown variety that dpack gave me, wish I'd saved some for replanting.

Had a look but couldn't see how to bulk order, am I being dim? Again?

They have a quite varied selection, what did you choose? I'm tempted to go for some of each..... we do eat a lot of garlic.

Me too, but looks like they've switched to another variety that apparently gives 4-6 cloves per bulb, got to be worth a go.
