I have a possible problem with some of my hens....

Tow of them had a hardened muddy bit on the pad of their feet.

The first one lay perfectly still whilst I removed it, the foot was perfectly fine underneath....no poblem...

Chicken No.2 however, when I finally dislodged the muddy disc, it would appear that the skin came away with it, under neath was a thick whitish substance......she was not distressed...so I am hoping not in pain....

What do I do now?
Could this be bumblefoot?
Or is there a less worrying answer

Thanks
Pete

If a chicken has Bumblefoot it has a swollen hard foot caused by infection. It can also flare up when chickens are roosting quite high up and a re landing on hard surfaces.
Its usually the central pad on the underside of the foot thats affected. Its hard to clear up and if the foot is cut open, you normally find a hard cheesy type substance. You can scrape this out but then you are left with a hole thats very slow to heal up and its likey to fill with the same yucky substance again.
Oral antibiotics don't tend to work too well, because there's a naturally poor blood flow to the area. You need to keep the foot as clean as you can and treat it with the purple antiseptic spray.

Here you go: https://www.ascott.biz/acatalog/Foot-Master-Aerosol-500ml-MD26L.html

Or you can get it from any farming suppliers.

Be careful with your aim.

It does wash off - eventually.

sometimes used for sheep foot problems. Great for dying your clothes. Borrow a can - your farming neighbour is bound to have one.

You might need to get a shot of penicillin for your chicken and keep the foot clean.

Actually I think the one in the link is different stuff. It says for feet and has a purple tracer. 'Purple spray' actually is purple all on it's own, gentian violet or somesuch.

Terramycin is different again, but also called purple spray. I've seen posts (elsewhere) saying "ooh don't use purple spray!" but they don't say which one!

I use gentian violet . . .
