I have always teneded to view fabric softener as a bit of a need created by the marketing machine anyway.

I'll agree with the vinegar, I swapped recently to using small amounts of grated soap in the machine plus a sprinkling of washing soda if the load was grubby, and a glop of vineger in the rinse drawer. Never had such nice laundry and no chemically smells either. Lovely!

my boys had a bit of excema as babies and I stopped using fabric conditioner then and have never bothered since. Don't think my clothes have suffered at all.

Never use the stuff! If you use no more than half the recommended dosage of washing powder/liquid, you should have no need for fabric softener.

Washing just gone on, with that concoction, albeit with spicy vinegar

could you mix essential oils with the vinegar? I expect you'd have to shake the bottle (or a load of chemical emulsifiers) but we can live with that, can't we. White malt vinegar on shopping list, along with rennet and salt pertre!

I actually prefer the crispness of freshly washed things, especially when they are dried on the line in the fresh air.

5% fabric softner base 94.8% warm / hot water 0.2% formalin dye and perfume if required

I haven't a clue about vinegars. Would white wine vinegar (what I have in my cupboard) do the job? What about cider vinegar? (lol would I smell like an apple... )

White wine or cider vinegar would be fine - I can't see anything wrong with smelling a bit appley! It is just a bit expensive. I can buy a 5 litre container of generic white vinegar for about £1, so I'd rather use that for washing than my posh organic cider vinegar. Save that for your salads!

I forgot! I did try putting essential oils in the vinegar, and though I personally wouldn't bother with it just for softening (or with fabric softener, actually!) for dissolving the oils in so my clothes and linen smells lovely, its worth it. Smells gorgeous, even my air dried stuff (i've been using lavener oil in the tumbler for ages, but this is a good way to get it into everything, especially as I tumble less and less these days!)

Hey all, Kdna from South Australia here. Did you know that supermarket fabric softner is made from Pigs Fat?

It is really bad for your washine machine and clothes and the recipes for home made stuff are much better and don't do either your washine machine or clothes any damage.

Next time you look at fabric softner you will realise how oily it looks. You may aswell wash your clothes using dripping!!!
Stick with the homemade stuff and you not only looking after your white goods and clothes but the environment and animals too.

Reading all the listings above please can anyone advise on the soap area of the topic. Which soap is the best to use (haven't been brave enough yet to try the receipe) and how much should I use. I use soda crystals in the wash as I find it gets the washing cleaner and reduces the amount of washing powder needed.

I must admit I didn't know about the fabric softners (would explain why I have to clean the drawer out frequently) will be trying the vinegar solution. I use white vinegar for cleaning and it's brilliant.

It washes beautifully.
