Is it possible to track when someone has come to your site as a result of clicking your ds banner ad? I was just wondering how much of a difference having a banner on ds makes, versus just having a regular presence.

It's something that you would have to have on your own website your end, I think - it comes as standard with many hosting packages, but you often have to activate it.

It would tell you that people had come from downsizer but I wouldn't have thought that it would tell you where on downsizer. Or would it?

Would that tell me that it came specifically from the banner though, or just the downsizer site? I guess you'd have to have a slightly different url from the banner/profile than general links.

I'm not sure - certainly on the stats for our old website, we used to be able to drill down to tell where in particular from a particular site people had come. But the banner is a bit different, I think, because it's sort of a floating thingy that appears on different pages.

I am sure Jema and Andrew will be along in a minute to tell me I'm spouting rubbish

It can do, the referring url does get passed from most browsers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_referrer

Can be an invasion of privacy issue of course.

Thanks for that. I was just wondering whether the banners were a worthwhile part of the site, as most orders that I know come trough DS are from established members who have answered a Trading Post or even as a result of an unrelated thread/signature.

What about having a specific banner for the ds site. Would that be able to be followed then.

I certainly use the banner ads when I want to order from one of the traders. It's much easier than footling round looking for a post, especially if it's someone who doesn't post too often.

if you don't have something included in your hosting, then use a 3rd party app like sitemeter.

As an aside, I sometimes re-key a URL in a new tab specifically to avoid a site knowing from where I have just come (the HTTP referrer mechanism that Jema mentions).
