I have finally realised I will never have time to upgrade, well not actually upgrading but starting to work on a different PC with the latest Ubuntu.

So today is as awful a time as any to go for it.

It took two and a half to three hours here, with a bad connection (it says one and a half) two days ago.
No problems. Slower to start up than the last one, but only a few seconds. Still quick

looking good here, but the test is the transfer of the old PCs files to it... e.g. can I at least get my work essentials and email onboard.

upgraded yesterday in about 1.5 hours, most of which time I continued working on my pc. All's gone smoothly.

First thing I did was change the windows buttons back to the right hand side as explained here .

Then, I had to tweak the sound settings to get it to work ( system>prefferences>sounds>output>connector) and put back my volume control on the panel (right click on panel>add to panel> indicator applet).

My toshiba laptop boots up faster and with less hassle than on 9.10, then again,boot-up was often problematic on 9.10 for me, so aything would be better.

One thing to watch out for is that Sun-Java is now in the partner repository, and the 9.10 ->10.04 upgrade switches you to IcedTea as the default JVM.

Is faster on all my machines. That machine probably needs a clean install but that'll have to wait another month or two.

Mine just fecked up.

Something wrong with the grub install - Just getting 'grub rescue>' and nothing else.

Seems to be a fairly common problem that might relate to multiboot systems on multiple drives.

Gone pretty smoothly here, and I'm using it now

Much quicker boot than two years ago, and so far no sound problems.

Thanks for that, I'm thinking about a fresh install from 9.10 to 10.04 in a couple of weeks (after the first set of bug fixes have been created).

What I hate about progress is the unnecessary changes that mean I have to unlearn loads of things that have become automatic.

So all you Ubuntu freaks - keep the comments coming. Its nice that you should suffer so that I don't have to

Networking is currently confusing me a bit. I blew up my network when I assigned static ips, and admin/preferences/network connections is telling me only about eth0 and that I have NEVER used that connection.

I'm not seeing any applets that tell me a lot about what connection I am using. I have done "clever" things to get back, but I am stuck at the GUI level on this

Using synaptic package manager to install the ms core fonts is really a good idea.

https://embraceubuntu.com/2005/09/09/installing-microsoft-fonts/

Can't get away from those fonts being nicer.
