... exactly as it says. I mean they seem to look the same at all stages so is their any obvious, or even not so obvious, 'pick now' indicator?

They become softer, and a bit translucent.

Taste one.
If you pull a face, they aren't ready!

About a month after the Labrador starts eating them, two weeks after the chickens and about a day after the fox scoffs the lot!

As has been said, they start going soft and you can taste them. Depending on their use they can be picked when reasonably firm and sharp (for cooking IIRC) and softer for eating raw. You also get some varieties that start off green and gradually go red as they ripen.

True!!!

Although the top ones will ripen quicker than the bottom ones. I tested mine to day, 3 ripe, about 120 not ready yet. When they squidge slightly, and you can see the seeds a bit, they're ready, just like whitecurrants.

Thats the best time to eat them according to my hubby He won't eat them once they start to go soft.

Our gooseberry has gone nuts this year, he's been eating a couple of dozen a day for the last 3 weeks or so and theres still a good 200+ left on the bush.
