I have here an electric motor which I want to put to use. It came out of a Stannar stairlift and was ripped out by someone a bit keen on the ripping...

Coming out of the motor their are 3 wires: brown blue and black. Whichever way you try them, they measure 8.5ohm.
At the end of the motor there is a thing with two more wires: my guess is this is something like to give information back to the control box: maybe a rev counter?

The control box has most of the wires into it missing. It has four large black boxes which I believe are relays or some sort of switching device. Bit puzzled to why there are four.

So the question is: how do I power it up?
If I put 240VAC across it and choose the wrong wires, is it going to go bang?

I have asked Stannar, but it is obsolete, so they cannot help.

240 in the wrong holes wont do it any good

the 4 boxes are probably relays so as the controllers (hand switch and wall switches) are low voltage ,at a guess it might have top wall, bottom wall, chair and remote(maybe)

are there any clues on the motor id plate ?

I don't think there was a remote, and I don't see why you'd want a relay for each switch, certainly not one that big anyway.

Not really. There is a serial number, but if Stannar can't find owt to refer it to, then I doubt that anyone else can...

When you say Stannah, who did you speak to? I bet you need to find an engineer with a few years under his belt, and he'll know the model.

Doing a bit of google suggests they're battery powered, so 240v might be pretty, briefly.

Batteries help avoid those 'What would Thora do?' moments.

I wrote and asked, they phoned back next morning and made a convincing show of wanting to help...

I think this model may pre-date google. When I said the plate had no clues, it (and other parts) does suggest it is a mains appliance.

I am not familiar with those...

Vikings came before Google, but I can still find things on it about them.

The plate on the motor says 50Hz and the transformer is too small to drive the motor: I conclude that it is a mains motor.
